Used vs New Tractor Tyres: When Second Hand Makes Sense

A new set of rear tractor tyres can be a big purchase. For many NZ farms, a sound used tyre with fair tread for the work is often the more economical option.

Used tractor tyres make sense when you’re replacing one tyre in a pair, adding duals, or running an older tractor. New tyres are the better buy for high hours and heavy work.

At Taits Rural, we sell used agricultural tyres and wheels across NZ alongside our wider range of used parts. If you’re deciding whether to purchase a new or used tractor tyre, this guide will help you to make an informed decision.

When Second Hand Tractor Tyres Make Sense

We’d look at used tractor tyres in NZ in these situations:

Replacing one damaged tyre

If one rear is cut or blown and the other still has good tread, a used tyre with similar wear keeps the pair even. A new tyre next to a half worn one gives you two different rolling diameters on the same axle.

Second tractors and lighter work

A feed out tractor, a loader tractor around the yard or a spare machine doing low hours rarely needs full tread.

Adding duals

Duals spread weight and add traction on soft ground. A used set, like our Starmaxx 460/80R38 duals listed with 90% tread left, is a lower cost way to run them.

Older tractors

On an older tractor, a used tyre in the right inch size often makes more sense than new rubber on a machine with limited life left.

Getting a tractor ready to sell

Replacing a failed tyre with a sound used one keeps the tractor working and saleable.

What to Check Before Buying Used Tractor Tyres

A used tyre is only good value if it’s sound. Before buying, check:

  • Tread remaining. Our listings state this where we have it. For example, our Pirelli 520/70R38 is listed with about 20% tread left.

  • Sidewall condition. Look for deep cracking, cuts, bulges or exposed cords.

  • Repairs. Ask whether the tyre has been plugged, patched or vulcanised.

  • Age. Read the four-digit date code on the sidewall. Our guide on how to read tractor tyre sizes covers date codes and size markings.

  • Size and construction. Match radial with radial and bias with bias on the same axle.

  • Speed rating. Check this meets your tractor manufacturer’s specification.

  • Rims. If wheels are included, check for rust, cracks or bent flanges. Our Dunlop 14.9-38 set wheels listing notes that the rims have rust, for example.

If you can’t inspect a tyre in person, ask us for extra photos or details before you buy. Have any used tyre checked and fitted by a tyre professional before it goes into service.
